Júlio Augusto Henriques: pioneiro nas ideias evolucionistas em Portugal

Abstract

Na segunda metade do século XIX, a história das ciências da vida em Portugal assistiu à introdução das ideias evolucionistas de Darwin, sob a responsabilidade do botânico Júlio Augusto Henriques, em 1865-66. Foi professor na Faculdade de Filosofia da Universidade de Coimbra, director do Jardim Botânico, fundador da Sociedade Broteriana e do Boletim da Sociedade Broteriana. Este estudo pretende apresentar as etapas do processo de recepção das teorias evolucionistas naquela Universidade, bem como comprovar a constituição de uma herança científica baseada em princípios darwinistas que, seguramente, contribuiu para um melhor entendimento dos fenómenos da Natureza e, consequentemente, para o progresso das ciências naturais no nosso país.

In the second half of the 19th century, history of sciences in Portugal was marked by the introduction of Darwin’s evolutionist ideas in 1865-66, under the responsibility of the botanist Júlio Augusto Henriques. He was a professor in the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Coimbra, director of the Botanic Garden, founder of the Broterian Society and the Journal of the Broterian Society. This study intends to present the stages of the reception process of those evolutionist theories in that University, as well as to prove the formation of a scientific heritage based on the darwinian principles that, surely, contributed for a better understanding of Nature’s phenomena and, consequently, for the progress of the natural sciences in our country.
