In the past few years Portugal has been undergoing a process of curriculum reorganization which has pioneering proposals to the teaching and learning process of Sciences in the elementary level - 7'" and SIth grades. From this point of view we intended to develop a study which would provide us with an answer to the following investigative problem: In the framework of present reorganization of curricula for the 3rd cycle of basic education: To conceive and validate teacher-learning strategies following the analysis of difficulties on concepts of sound. Thus, we selected and analysed the present curriculum guidelines for this level of education as far as the contents related with the production and the transmission of sound are concerned, as well as other curriculum guidelining documents. We also selected bibliography concerning alternative conceptions to those contents. Afterwards, a set of strategies were created in order to study the sound promoting cross-section among different curriculum subjects and managing the lesson time in such a way that the discussion of issues related with sound as well as the diversity of teaching methodology were possible. In this learning process we mostly thought of experimental strategies which would lead to a better understanding of those contents, narnely using problem-solving situations. Data of the History of Science were used as one of the methodologies in this approach. We implemented and evaluated the strategies in Escola EB 213 José Ferreira Pinto Basto de ilhavo in the school year 200412005 and involved two 8th grade classes, one experimental, where the strategies were implemented, namely involving some teachers and other sound and audiometria professionals, and another one used as the control-class, to each we did not teach, that followed a more traditional way of teaching. The study we developed used a mixed investigation methodology , essentially includi ng action-research dimension but also a quasi experimental format. The potencial of strategies were analysed through a variety of instruments especially designed for this study, such as the record of supervised lessons, the diagnosis questionnaire (which was handed out before and after the implementation of the strategies in both classes) a questionnaire of interest, both given to the students, and also questionnaires aiming at coliecting information from other intervenients. From the analysis of the results, we concluded that: The students gave evidence of a deeper commitment during the process of teaching and revealed better skills, when compared to more traditional scenarios; The teachers involved considered this study a positive approach in the sense that it promoted and developed the intersection among different subject contents, as well as, their own envolvement, although coming from different areas; The other professionals admitted that their participation in this process has contributed to alert the young people to harmful effects of noise.
