Estudo exploratório sobre a saúde mental dos professores

Abstract

Conscientes de que os professores são uma das classes profissionais que acusam um maior desgaste apresentando, muitos deles, sintomas depressivos e queixas somáticas, o presente estudo tem como objectivo reflectir e identificar os problemas de saúde mental dos mesmos que, levam a insatisfação e ao absentismo na docência e alertar para a necessidade do desenvolvimento de competências que permitam elaborar estratégias no sentido de ultrapassar os problemas. Utilizando metodologias, qualitativa e quantitativa foram realizados dois estudos. A amostra do estudo 1 foi constituída por 2 médicos e 3 professores e a do estudo 2 por 251 professores a trabalhar no Distrito de Aveiro. Foram utilizados os seguintes instrumentos: entrevista semi-estruturada e três questionários de tipo Like~t; Lista de Sintomas de Stress. (Bartone, et aL, 1989), STAI, (1 e 2) (Charles D. Spielberger 1983) e BDI-ll (Beck et a1 1988). Na análise dos resultados recorremos a análise de conteúdo e a análise estatística (descritiva e inferencial). Os resultados do estudo 1 revelaram que os professores são de facto uma das classes profissionais que mais procura consultas do foro psiquiátrico recorrendo muitos deles, a medicação específica da especialidade. Podemos ainda verificar que existe alguma insatisfação profissional que decorre sobretudo de alguns factores nomeadamente, problemas ao nível das inter relações, discrepância entre a formação inicial e a prática, sobrecarga de trabalho e consequente falta de tempo e desvalorização do trabalho do professor. Relativamente ao estudo 2, os resultados indicaram alguns dados preocupantes relativamente ao nível da insatisfação profissional e saúde mental dos professores, com particular relevância para as queixas somáticas Idepressivas e elevados níveis de ansiedade. Destes estudos, sobressaem a necessidade de serem implementadas intervenções a nível de todo o sistema educativo, bem como a nível de estratégias de apoio aos professores em situações problemáticas.

Conscious that teachers are one of the professional groups that accuse a bigger consuming revealing, many of them, depressive symptoms and somatic complaints, the current study has as aim to reflect and to identify the mental health problems of the same ones that, lead to disstisfaction and to absenteeism in the teaching profession and also to alert for the necessity of the development of abilities that allow to elaborate strategies in the direction of exceeding the problems. Using methodologies, quantitive and qualitative two studies had been carried through. The sample of study 1 was composed by 2 doctors and 3 teachers and of study 2 for 251 teachers working in the District of Aveiro. The following instruments, had been used: semi structured interview and three Likert type questionnaires (Symptoms Checklist (SC), Bartone, et al., 1989), STAI, (1 e 2) (Charles D. Spielberger 1983) e BDI-II (Beck et al 1988).. In the analysis of the results we appealed to both contents and statistics (descriptive and inferential) analysis. The results of study 1 had disclosed that teachers are, in fact, one of the professional groups that more seeks consultations of the psychiatric forum, turning, many of them, for aid to specific medication of the speciality. We can still verify that some professional dissatisfaction exists which, above all, results from some particular factors nominated, problems to the level of the inter relations, discrepancy between the starting formation and the practical one, overcharge of work consequent lack of time and depreciation of teachers’ work. Comparatively to study 2, the results indicated some preoccupying data relatively to the professional unsatisfyingness and mental health of the teachers, with particular relevance for the somatic and depressive complaints. From this study, it stands out the necessity to be implemented new interventions to the level of all the educative system, as well as the level of strategies of support to the teachers in problematic situations.
