The development strategies defend the introduction of the environmental component in all areas of educational, economical and social activities. The aim of this project was to study the role played by the media in the increasing of knowledge of Environmental Education. This study was made by gathering information in the school community, mainly in two schools located in different areas of the district of Aveiro: Colégio de Nossa Senhora da Apresentação (located in Calvão, near the coast) and the Secondary School of Oliveira do Bairro (located in the interior). This difference in terms of geographical location made it possible to observe particular educational and social contrasts. The project was developed having in mind different aims: (i) to characterize the profile of each group of people participating in the process; (ii) to find out what each group thinks of the role played by the media in what concerns environmental education; (iii) to point out the perception of the different groups about the improvement of their knowledge of environmental education through the media; (iv) to evaluate the contribution of the media in the increasing of information about environmental issues in general. This study was based on a survey made using different questionnaires which had previously been written with the help of 10th grade students, parents, teachers and other members of the school community. These questionnaires included questions about environmental issues in different areas and school subjects so that a connection between school curriculum and economical activities could be established. The questions used in the survey were restricted answer, open answer and multiple choice type. 50 students, 17 parents, 39 teachers, 30 people working in different areas at school and 4 town-councillors answered the questionnaires. The use of these written questionnaires made it possible for me to relatively easily inquire different groups of people and at the same time guarantee the answers remained anonymous, which was a very important condition for the inquired people to answer as honestly as required. It also gave the students the possibility to choose their own timing in order to interfere as less as possible with their school activities. The most used questions were the restricted answer type ones and the two main reasons for this choice were: (i) they let us know the opinion of the inquired ones about the different matters ; (ii) they allow a huge gathering of data. On the other hand, the open answer questions enable the inquired to make suggestions and give their opinion on the matters, which reduces some of the limitations associated with the alternatives given in the restricted answer type questions. The questionnaire was based on the social, educational and cultural context of the students. Its main purpose was to collect information at three distinct levels and with different aims. The results showed that the Environmental Education should, due to his nature, be presented to all communities according to the needs, interests and motivations of the different age and social/occupational groups. It should help people in general (children, teenagers and adults) and care about them. Therefore the syllabus, teaching methods and materials should be adapted to the learning necessities in what concerns the environmental studies. As the Environmental Education should be a whole life process, available for everyone, it must be directed to all educational levels, in and outside the school. Besides that, education will assume an essencial role in the prevention and solution of environmental problems. Being a part of the education process it must centre itself in practical problems, developing its interdisciplinar character. The introduction of the Environmental Education at school asks for more than a simple exchange of information and knowledge. It asks for an interdisciplinar approach that can go from the introduction of environmental components in the different school traditional subjects until the integration of those subjects in project works related with the environment. Students and other people working together in all educational process may therefore be helped to observe, analyse, think and investigate in order to obtain through various experiences a better and greater comprehension of the environment. You can’t simply ask students to know things by heart. They should be able to identify themselves the values that should guide their lives and behaviour, not because they are imposed a certain moral or ideology, but because they have a real and close contact with the environment that surrounds them.
