The main objective of this work is to study the feasibility of the tungsten carbide (WC) particle covering as an alternative stage to the conventional mixture, ensuring the initial chemical homogeneity of the binder phase elements. For such purpose, WC powders were coated with stainless steel 304 (AISI) by a physical vapour deposition technique, called sputtering. The other objective of this work is the study of the stainless steel itself as a binder in the WC based composites. To study the viability of the deposition technique as a mixture process, depositions were performed over the WC powder, using variable stainless steel amounts in the range of 1-7wt.%. The characterisation results of the coated powders were promissory, as they indicated that all WC particles were homogeneously coated with stainless steel and all the steel constituent elements were deposited in the right proportions. Afterwards the coated powders were submitted to the stages of conventional processing: pressing and sintering. In the first stage, the powders were compacted by unidirectional pressing using pressures between 50 and 200 MPa, to assess the right compacting level that was found to be 190 MPa. In sintering stage, the compact was densified in vacuum atmosphere, in a temperature range 960ºC-1425ºC, with a dwell time of 3 hours. The compact behaviour of the coated powders revealed that it was not necessary any type of pressing lubricant, commonly used in the WC based composites to reach adequate resistance to handling. This observation increases interest of using coated powders, because avoiding pressing lubricant leads to the removal of two stages of the traditional WC based composites processing: namely the milling necessary to homogenise the lubricant and others components and the posterior removal of the pressing lubricant. The study of the stainless steel as WC sintering binder showed that the use of the steel constituent elements, specifically the iron and the nickel, are efficient in the promotion of the densification of the WC based composite. In powders with around 6wt.% of steel, the maximum densification was about 95%, sintered at temperatures higher than 1350ºC. Higher relative densities were not obtained because a significant loss of the constituent elements of the binder phase was detected with the increase of the temperature of sintering. In relation to the thermal reactivity of the composition in study, the initial phases of WC and Fe-a type, in green compact, react below 960ºC to form a phase of M6C type. Metallic ion M is essentially W and Fe, but it also contains Cr and Ni proceeding from the covering. This phase is present in weight percentages variable between 8 and 11%, and is dispersed on the grains of the major WC phase. The results of this initial investigation with WC powders coated with stainless steel, shows that the sputtering technique is promising as a mixture process and that the stainless steel is efficient as a densification binder. However, future studies are necessary in order to obtain WC stainless steel binder based composites more dense, with better controlled stoiquiometry and with lower percentage of M6C.
