económica, especialmente no turismo.
desenvolvimento.
complementar do destino. The main goal of this research paper is to measure the importance that major events have both in promoting and solidifying the image of a tourist destination. Focusing on the year prior to Euro 2004 and the opinions expressed by tourists, this paper specifically analyzes the image of Portugal as the host country of this event, in the context of the broader image of Portugal as a tourist destination. Portugal was the country chosen as the subject of the research, which will show what the advantages of hosting major events are, and whether they have the ability to change and/or improve the image of the country. This paper also aims at anticipate the role that the EURO 2004 will play in this process. Since the 90s, Portugal has had the opportunity to host a variety of events, whose importance not only contributed to feed and improve its self-image, but also to increase its international exposure. Some examples are: Lisboa 1994, Expo 98, Porto 2001, World Handball Championship, World Cycling Championship and the Masters (Tennis). The EURO 2004 will be another important step towards the strengthening of the Portuguese position in the world. It will show the maturity, vitality, organization and strength of the country; and contribute to the repositioning of Portugal with its potential positive impact in all sectors of the economic activity. The Tourism Industry will be the most influenced both directly, with the increase in its revenue due to a higher influx of visitors, and indirectly through media exposure, international recognition and its overall development. As this research will show, other attributes of Portugal play a bigger role in the country’s appeal as a holiday destination than the event itself. The tournament is rather viewed as a complementary attraction; however, its relevance in the enhancement of the image of this country is clearly understood. |
