Abstract: | Os arrojamentos em Portugal continental encontram-se
costa continental portuguesa.
Strandings in Portugal mainland are documented since the twelfth century. From 1977 onwards, with the implementation of a national strandings network, the records began to be collected systematically. Strandings records in Portugal and in the world can provide important long-term data to the knowledge of large-scale ecological processes that may be affecting the cetacean populations. The aim of this study is to characterize temporal, seasonal and spatial distribution of strandings between 1979 and 2009. Based on these data an approach has been made regarding the temporal and seasonal strandings distribution and the sea surface temperature (SST). In the analysis of the time period studied 3522 cetacean strandings were recorded, consisting of 21 different species. The most frequent species was the common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) with 46.51% of the total records, followed by the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) with 7.13%, the striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) with 4.66%, the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) with 4.37% and the minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) with 2.41% of the records registered on the Portuguese coast. In the strandings data, 3.5% of strandings were documented catches, 19.3% showed evidence of by-catch and 77.2% showed no evidence of by-catch or any other cause of death. The annual increase of strandings, probably reflects an increase in sampling effort. Considerations were made about a possible sampling effort, including the number of institutions involved in the collection of records over time. The largest number of strandings were recorded in the North, Central and North Central areas of the country. Considering the seasonal temperature and strandings, in northern and central areas between 1995 and 2009, it was found that strandings occur more frequently when the sea surface temperatures are lower. The temporal distribution of temperature between 1982 and 2009 and the strandings distribution between 1979 and 2009 by area shows in both cases an increasing general trend in the time series. This study, raises the hypothesis that the strandings can have a time-lagged response to maximum and minimum sea surface temperature. |
