Safety and conservation of bridges has been raising interest and gaining increasing importance over the last years. This is the result of several serious accidents that happened in Portugal and in the whole world. Recent changes on regulation (Eurocodes) at the level of the seismic action and in the philosophy of design and safety check resulted in the need to repair and strengthen existing structures. This dissertation aims to study the safety check of existing bridges and the required seismic strengthening using Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) systems. The different damages to reinforced concrete bridges after earthquakes were analysed. The different techniques of seismic retrofit with FRP systems on the structural components of bridges (with a focus on piers and beams) were studied, methodologies and recommendations for seismic design and retrofit are presented. A case study is used, in which the structural behaviour of an existing bridge was simulated, identifying and locating the critical areas and a solution for the seismic strengthening at the component level is proposed, based on the indications in FIB Bulletin 14 and in accordance with the philosophy used by the Eurocodes. |
