Pais e filhos apenas poderiam usar a
mudando a sua postura, expressões e comportamentos (primeiro positivos (I) e
número de respostas correctas e incorrectas não variou muito nas duas partes;
The socio-emotional relationship between parents and children seems to have become a priority concern for a considerable part of Social Sciences. Currently, increased responsibilities with regard to their role in the development of children, in the formation of their personality and of a morally acceptable character and conduct, in the promotion of relationships based on respect and solidarity. We believe that communication is the basis of this relationship. Specifically, we believe in a feature of communication which is usually undervalued: the nonverbal communication (language code based on the expression of gestures and body). The great aim set for this study was to evaluate how the nonverbal signals issued by the parents reflect the degree of socio-emotional closeness with their children and determine their state of mind, self-confidence and productivity. We considered that, first of all, it would be important to characterize the parents’ involvement in children’s school life. To accomplish this, we built two instruments that would allow us to obtain the valuable information: a questionnaire that would be applied to children and one, built in parallel, that would be applied to their parents. The data collected were statistically treated and it was possible to proceed with some results: the mother keeps playing a central role in children’s school life and shows a daily interest by it; the father is only referred to as part of “both parents” and doesn’t embody any role by himself; children seem to recognize and acknowledge the importance of having involved and interested parents. Secondly, we invited parents to attend school for a meeting moment with their children. Parents and children were only allowed to use the nonverbal language to communicate. We asked parents to change their posture, expressions and behaviour during this meeting (the first ones would be positive (I) and then negative (II)). In terms of results, we noticed that: in the beginning of the meeting, the children were smiling and showing a straight posture and, then, they became sad and worried, with a less confident posture; the number of correct and incorrect answers didn’t vary much in the two parts; the children took much longer to solve the activities of the second part than of the first. The way parents and children communicated with each other during the meeting allowed us to anticipate some considerations on the socio-emotional relationship that connects them. |
