The transport sector is one of the most pressured in the decarbonization strategy. One of the possible changes lies in the increase in the degree of electrification of road vehicles, requiring new conditions of production, transmission and distribution of electric energy. In accordance with the Paris Agreement and following the EU Regulation 2018/1999, Portugal prepared the National Energy and Climate Plan for 2030 (PNEC 2030), committing to incorporate 20% of renewable energy in the sector and a reduction of 40% of GHG emissions by 2030. This work intends to anticipate the consequences of this policy not only in the production of electricity but also at an economic and environmental level, in order to enable an increasing number of EVs (electric vehicles). The Portuguese energy mix is analysed and future scenarios for EV penetration are predicted using a diffusion model. According to the forecast results, Portugal is far from reaching the desired targets in the transport sector. It is still necessary to increase the resilience of the national electricity grid with the increase, still not expected, in the number of BEVs as well as in the installed renewable power. |
