Entre a tolerância e a exclusão: o real e o imaginário da herança judaica na paróquia de Leomil

Abstract

Não obstante 99% dos habitantes da freguesia de Leomil, concelho de Moimenta da Beira, sejam católicos, são conhecidos por judeus. Essa alcunha intergrupal não é entendida como depreciativa. Os que daí são naturais e aí residem orgulham-se da aceção local, considerando-a traço cultural e identitário. No entanto, a maioria da população dessa vila do centro-norte de Portugal ignora o porquê do epíteto. Este artigo pretende discutir a teoria veiculada pela tradição para o explicar, através da análise de fontes originais. Trata-se de um estudo de caso que, a partir das aportações teórico-metodológicas da micro-história, permite demonstrar como uma investigação cientificamente conduzida através de fontes históricas pode desarmar a tradição oral, mas também como esta pode ser um ponto de partida interessante para reconstituir alguns factos do passado relacionados com a tolerância e exclusão da comunidade judaica portuguesa.

Although the fact that 99% of the Leomil citizens are catholic today, they are called Jews. That intergrupal nick name is not depreciative. Each one of the mentioned individuals who are living in that small village of the Portugal center-north have proud of that localist aception, considering that it is something cultural who belong to their tradition and identity. Nevertheless the majority of the population does not know why they are known as Jews. Considering that there are some old theories built to explain that reality, this paper envisages discussing them through the an alysis of some original sources. This is a case study that, based on the theoretical and methodological contributions of microhistory, allows us to demonstrate how an investigation scientifically conducted through historical sources can disarm the oral tradition, but also how this can be an interesting starting point to reconstitute some facts of the past related to the tolerance and exclusion of the Portuguese Jewish community.
