Denúncia, perseguição e dispersão de cristãos-novos de Santarém entre a União Ibérica e a Restauração

Abstract

Agindo no sentido de impedir o criptojudaísmo, o Tribunal da Fé exerceu um dos mais alargados controles sociais da época moderna. Observa-se o caso da comunidade cristã-nova de Santarém, entre a União Ibérica e a Restauração; a comunidade judaica scalabitana, próspera desde tempos recuados, manteve-se como cristã-nova ou criptojudaica após a conversão forçada em fins do século xv, enfrentando o poder persecutório da Inquisição de Lisboa, com a instauração em Portugal do Tribunal do Santo Ofício.

Acting to prevent crypto-Judaism, the Court of Faith exercised one of the most extensive social controls of the early modern age. This work analyzes the case of the New Christian community of Santarém, between the Iberian Union and the Restoration; the scalabitan jewish community, prosperous since ancient times, remained as New Christian or crypto-Jewish after the forced conversion at the end of the 15th century, facing the persecutory power of the Lisbon Inquisition, with the establishment of the Holy Office in Portugal.
