Nowadays the scientific knowledge of Biology and its technological applications influence people's lives and in general all the living being's lives in a profound way. It is urgent that our young people become informed citizens capable of making responsible decisions. These expectations and concerns demand that the role of school and the targets of the science education should be thought over. The teachers should be important agents of changes. In order to achieve this aim the formation programmes must prepare them to those challenges. The study which we are presenting is situated at the level of the pedagogical practice component of the integrated model of the initial formation of the teachers who will be in charge of the secondary education students (13 - 18 years old). Its specific ambit of intervention are the practices of the teacher who at school organises and supervises, in a direct way, the activities of formation of future teachers of Biology. The objectives of the study have been the construction and empirical validation of a supervising model for trainee teachers based on and connected with the new tendencies in the teaching of sciences, teacher education and the students' constructive learning. The adopted methodology has been of qualitative nature and the followed paradigm has been the case study according to the model of action-research (Stenhouse, 1988). The empirical work has lasted for ten months (from September 1996 to June 1997). Four trainee teachers who were in their last year, taking their degree in Biology-Geology teaching in the University of Aveiro have participated. The researcher has also been the supervisor of the trainee teachers, in this way contributing to the study and the development of the case itself Multiple sources of evidence (participant observation, interview and documentary analysis) and triangular process of techniques and data has been used. The collection of data has been accompanied by the simultaneous analysis, which has permitted the construction and the empirical validation of the model of the supervising activities. At the end of this study and in order to check the effects of the applications of the model an analysis of the contents of data has been made. We come to the conclusions that the formation programme has enable the trainee teachers to construct the conceptions which we consider favourable to the challenges of scientific education and to the constructive students' learning.
