Abstract: | O Baixo Vouga Lagunar (BVL) alberga uma importante área agrícola e localizase
e a composição geoquímica.
No topo
The Baixo Vouga Lagunar (BVL) hosts an important agricultural area and is located in the innermost part of the “Ria de Aveiro”, at the confluence of the Vouga river with this lagoon. This area has been subject to several transformations over the last hundreds of years, either natural, resulting from the formation of the lagoon itself, or anthropogenic, with interventions in the landscape modelling and protection constructions in the “Ria de Aveiro”. These actions have been resulting, for example, in sea level rising and, consequently, in the salinization of agricultural soils. As part of this work, a drill core sampling was carried out (S1) to a depth of 12 m, located in an agricultural field, next to the train line. Although the area where this drilling was carried out is not subject to a preponderant influence of the lagoon hydrodynamics, the river discharges can contribute to the marginal flooding of the “Ria de Aveiro” and affect this entire area. The aim of this work was contributing to the sedimentological and geochemical knowledge of a vertical profile in the BVL zone and to evaluate the impact of natural and anthropogenic processes depending on the depositional dynamics of the Aveiro lagoon. Through sectioning of the drill core, samples of sediments and pore water were collected and analysed, namely the physicochemical parameters and the geochemical content. The granulometric parameters were also determined in the sediments. The results show that the basal layers of the sequence contain coarser material, alkaline pH and low levels of organic matter. These data suggest the dominance of a higher energy and marine-influenced depositional environment. The more superficial layer present greater variability of these parameters, which means diversity of depositional environments, that is, an alternation of more or less energetic regimes. The geochemical composition of sediments and interstitial waters confirms the existence of different sedimentary deposition regimes: marine-dependent in the basal part of the sediment column, showing higher values of Ca, Sr and Na; while in the upper strata indicate terrestrial (fluvial) contributions. The topmost column sequence highlights the anthropic contributions expressed by higher Cu and Pb amounts. |
