Existir musicalmente: jazz, desafios comuns, políticas institucionais e processos de individuação em contextos de big band

Abstract

Esta tese dedica-se ao estudo sobre os processos de individuação à luz das práticas coletivas associadas à performance jazz, com enfoque particular no caso das seguintes big bands: Orquestra Tabajara (Brasil) e Orquestra Jazz Matosinhos (Portugal). Procura-se entender como se desenvolvem, em contextos distintos de organização social e de políticas institucionais os processos de individuação a partir do acontecimento performativo. Do ponto de vista teórico, o trabalho tem por base uma articulação interdisciplinar entre os Estudos de Jazz, a Etnomusicologia do Indivíduo e a Sociologia da Individuação. A metodologia privilegiou a etnografia e o trabalho de campo multisituado — desenvolvido entre 2016 e 2019 —, e, ainda, a adopção de práticas de investigação partilhada num trabalho dialógico com os músicos e as musicistas pertencentes às big bands em análise. Com a intenção de promover um diálogo entre as grandes representações/transformações coletivas e as experiências individuais dos músicos e das musicistas, seguindo as propostas do sociólogo Danilo Martuccelli, aplicou-se a noção de desafios comuns como operador analítico. Partiu-se do entendimento de que os membros de um coletivo musical estão consequentemente sujeitos a enfrentar um conjunto comum de desafios sociais. Por conseguinte, buscou-se identificar os grandes desafios comuns que indicam um modo particular de individuação nos coletivos estudados e analisar as formas como os atores são capazes de se (auto)construir enquanto indivíduos em contextos tão diferentes como são os casos de Portugal e Brasil. Como resultados, elaborou-se uma cartografia dos desafios comuns, que condicionam modos particulares de individuação em cada um dos coletivos estudados e que se relacionam diretamente com os desafios sociais que encontramos fora dos próprios coletivos. Sustenta-se que a condição histórica e as políticas sociais e institucionais que organizam e regulam os coletivos, condicionam as lutas, os feitos e as escolhas dos indivíduos, definindo processos diferentes de individuação. Porém, para individuar — um processo que é absolutamente fundamental no contexto do jazz — os músicos e as musicistas das duas big bands analisadas, reconhecem que o fazem sem colocar em causa o coletivo a que pertencem.

This thesis outlines the individuation processes in collective jazz performances, focusing on the following big bands: Orquestra Tabajara (Brazil) and Orquestra Jazz Matosinhos (Portugal). The study aims to understand how the individuation processes happen through the performative event, considering different contexts of social organization and institutional policies. The theoretical dimensions of the research are based on an interdisciplinary articulation between Jazz Studies, Ethnomusicology of the individual, and Individuation Sociology. The methodological approach was mainly based on ethnography and multi situated fieldwork — developed from 2016 to 2019. In addition, the study adopted shared research practices in a dialogical process with the musicians from the big bands analyzed. By drawing on the theory of the sociologist Danilo Martuccelli and his notion of common challenges as an analytical operator, this study attempts to promote a dialogue between the great representations/collective transformations and the individual experiences of the musicians. Central to this study is the understanding that musical collective members are consequently subject to facing a common set of social challenges. Therefore, this research tries to: (i) identify the common challenges that indicate a particular mode of individuation in the collectives studied, and (ii) analyze how the actors can (self) build themselves as individuals, taking into consideration the singularities of different contexts such as Portugal and Brazil. As the main result, a mapping of common challenges was elaborated, considering the particular conditions and modes of individuation identified in the collectives studied and how they are affected by social challenges existing outside the collectives. These results support the idea that the history behind and the social and institutional policies that organize and regulate collectives, condition the struggles, deeds, and choices of individuals, leading them to different processes of individuation. However, considering individuation is a fundamental process in jazz, the musicians of the two big bands analyzed recognize to do so without questioning the collective to which they belong.
