Emigrantes: estranhos numa terra estranha

Abstract

Shaun Tan nasceu em 1974 na Austrália Ocidental. É licenciado em Belas Artes e em Literatura Inglesa e actualmente trabalha como artista e autor freelance em Melbourne. Participa ainda em projectos de cenografia, arte conceptual e cinema de animação. As suas obras de carácter histórico exprimem sempre uma crítica social e política e como o próprio autor afirma, revelam o “interesse recorrente pela ideia de ‘pertença’” (Tan, 2007). O presente estudo centra-se na obra “Emigrantes”, de 2007 que conta a história, em imagens, de um homem que deixa a sua família para partir rumo ao desconhecido. Este emigrante chega a um lugar “enlouquecido” de costumes estranhos, animais peculiares, objectos flutuantes e idiomas indecifráveis. Desta forma, Tan introduz temas como a difícil adaptação a outra cultura, a importância da família, a identidade e o sentimento de pertença. Na pesquisa para este livro, o autor recolheu histórias autobiográficas de emigrantes, o que muito contribuiu para que esta obra fosse ecuménica, uma vez que equivale à realidade que enfrentam muitos emigrantes contemporâneos ou de outras épocas e de qualquer lugar. Esta é uma obra peculiar porque prescinde da linguagem escrita. Como refere Tan (2007), “o protagonista não pode ler nem compreender nada naquele novo país, assim o leitor também não deve poder”, para que possa vivenciar um sentimento de incerteza e de descoberta permitindo assim, que este se coloque facilmente no lugar do protagonista, assumindo que esta é uma situação pela qual todos podemos passar. Foi nesta posição que nos colocamos, sem, no entanto, suprimir os conhecimentos que possuímos da gramática do design visual de Kress e van Leeuwen (1996, 2006), que sendo um metodologia detalhada e explícita, permite que as imagens sejam analisadas como textos comunicativos visuais, não como um texto fechado em si próprio, mas inseridas no contexto socio-cultural de que fazem parte.

Shaun Tan was born in 1974 in Western Australia. He is a graduate of Fine Arts and English Literature and currently works as a freelance artist and author in Melbourne. He also participates in scenography, conceptual art and animation films. His works of historical character always express a social and political critique and, as the author himself affirms, reveal the “recurrent interest in the idea of ‘belonging’”. The present study focuses on Shaun Tan’s “The Arrival”, 2007 which tells the story, in images, of a man leaving his family for the unknown. The emigrant reaches a “crazy” place with strange customs, peculiar animals, floating objects and indecipherable languages. In this way, Tan introduces themes such as the difficulty of adapting of adapting to another culture, the importance of the family, identity and the feeling of belonging. In the research for this book, the author collected autobiographical stories of emigrants, which greatly contributed to this work being ecumenical, since it is equivalent to the reality faced by many contemporary emigrants or from other times and from other places. This is a peculiar work because it dispenses with written language. As Tan (2007) points out, “the protagonist can not read or understand anything in that new country, so the reader should not be able to”, so that he can experience a feeling of uncertainty and discovery thus allowing him to easily place himself as the protagonist, assuming that this is a situation that we can all pass go through. It was in this position that we put ourselves, without suppressing our knowledge of Kress and van Leeuwen’s (1996, 2006) visual design grammar, which, being a detailed and explicit methodology, allows the images to be analysed as visual communicative texts, not as a closed text in itself, but inserted in the socio-cultural context of which they are part.
