A perceção da imagem do Contabilista Certificado na sociedade portuguesa

Abstract

O objetivo geral do presente estudo é perceber qual é a imagem que a sociedade portuguesa tem atualmente dos Contabilistas Certificados e da profissão. Para o efeito, realizámos um estudo empírico através do uso de questionários dirigidos à sociedade portuguesa. Para o tratamento dos dados utilizámos uma abordagem quantitativa, usando medidas de estatística descritiva, complementadas com a apresentação de gráficos. Para algumas perguntas realizaram-se, ainda, testes de Kruskal-Wallis e de correlação Tau-b de Kendall. Com o nosso estudo concluímos que a sociedade portuguesa parece ter uma perceção positiva das características pessoais do Contabilista Certificado, considerando-o íntegro, honesto, ético, confidente, conselheiro, organizado, metódico, rigoroso, competente e inteligente, assim como uma pessoa sociável e com sentido de humor. Concluímos, ainda, que os respondentes atribuem ao Contabilista Certificado uma grande diversidade de funções, quer na preparação de informação económico-financeira, quer na sua análise e no apoio à gestão. Contudo, o cumprimento de obrigações fiscais é a utilidade da informação mais percecionada pela sociedade. Por outro lado, os respondentes consideram a profissão de Contabilista Certificado importante, mas ainda não lhe atribuem o adequado prestígio social, por ser muito absorvente em termos de tempo, não existir uma fácil progressão na carreira e não ser bem remunerada. Parece, contudo, que a OCC está a contribuir positivamente para uma evolução mais favorável da profissão na sociedade. O nosso estudo contribui para a literatura, apresentando novas evidências de uma evolução favorável na imagem do Contabilista Certificado e da profissão na sociedade. Contribui, ainda, para a discussão sobre esta problemática na sociedade portuguesa, reforçando o papel de destaque que a OCC deve continuar a ter na promoção e dignificação da profissão, tornando-a mais prestigiante, desafiante, bem remunerada e, consequentemente, mais apelativa.

The objective of this study is to understand the image that Portuguese society currently has of the Certified Accountants and the profession. For this purpose, we realized a study using questionnaires addressed to the Portuguese society. For data treatment we used a quantitative approach, using measures of descriptive statistics, complemented with the presentation of graphics. For some questions, Kruskal-Wallis and Kendall's Tau-b correlation tests were also used. With our study we conclude that the Portuguese society appears to have a positive perception of the personal characteristics of the Certified Accountant, considering him righteous, honest, ethical, confidant, adviser, organized, methodical, rigorous, competent and intelligent, as well as a sociable person with sense of humour. We also conclude that the Portuguese society attribute to the Certified Accountant a wide range of functions, both in the preparation of economic and financial information, and in its analysis and management support. However, compliance with tax obligations is the most perceived function by society. On the other hand, they consider the profession of Certified Accountant important, but they still don´t give it adequate social prestige, as it is very time-consuming, does not have an easy career progression and is not well paid. It seems, however, that the OCC (Portuguese Chartered Accountants Association) is contributing to a positive evolution of the profession in society. Our study contributes to the literature, presenting new evidence of a favorable evolution in the image of the Certified Accountant and the profession in society. It also intends to contribute to the discussion of this problem in Portuguese society, reinforcing the important role that the OCC should continue to have in the promotion and dignity of the profession, making it more prestigious, challenging, well-paid and therefore more appealing.
