The main objective of the present work was to find mesoporous solid acid catalysts that could replace the sulfuric acid used in the industrial process for the conversion of xylans into furfural. By aqueous acid catalysis, the xylan is hydrolyzed to xylose, and the latter is cyclodehydrated into furfural. The performance of these catalysts was studied in the xylose reaction, the slowest reaction, in dimethyl sulfoxide or in a biphasic system (water/organic solvent). The catalytic activity of Keggin-type heteropolyacids (HPAs) in homogeneous and heterogeneous phases is described in Chapters 2 to 4. The most interesting HPA was 12-tungstophosphoric acid (PW). PW was immobilized in micelle-templated silicas, resulting in materials, which exhibited higher activity than the bulk PW and the results were similar to those obtained with sulfuric acid. However, PW leaching led to loss of activity in the recycling tests. The activity of bulk and mesoporous supported cesium salts of PW was also studied, but the results did not reveal any significant advantages of these compounds over the corresponding PW catalysts. In Chapter 5, the synthesis and characterization of mesoporous silicas and hybrid materials containing organosulfonic acid groups are described. The performance of these materials was higher than that attainable with commercial zeolites but they deactivate with long residence times and their regeneration is not efficient due to the low thermial stability of the sulfonic groups (250 ºC). In Chapter 6, the catalytic activity of bulk, mesoporous silica-supported (per)sulfated zirconia is described, with attention to the effect of aluminium incorporation. In general, these materials exhibited higher catalytic activity than sulfuric acid, and in some cases 50% furfural yield was obtained. In the recycling experiments, these catalysts suffered sulfur leaching, but not always loss of activity. The activity of niobium-containing catalysts, such as microporous (AM-11) and mesoporous (Nb-MCM-41) niobium silicates, was also studied in the xylose reaction (Chapter 7). AM-11 catalysts could be recycled without loss of activity and selectivity, and the furfural selectivity (above 80% conversion) was higher than that for the Nb-MCM-41 materials. Aluminium-containing MCM-41 catalysts (Al- MCM-41) were also more stable than the Nb-MCM-41 materials. In Chapter 8, the catalytic performance of layered and exfoliated metal oxide cation exchangers, such as titanates, niobates and titanoniobates, is described. The exfoliated materials were the most active, selective and stable catalysts studied, with higher performance than sulfuric acid and some zeolites. The best exfoliated catalyst (HTiNbO5-MgO) was tested in the conversion of xylans-intofurfural.
