totalidade pluralistas e institucionais. In a time when populism proves to be an extremely effective political instrument, this dissertation aims to evaluate if the Portuguese Heads of State employ those types of instruments in their political speeches. From the absence of systematic studies applied to the Portuguese Presidents, as well as the mediatic debate over Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s presidential style, this dissertation emerges, in which the Global Populism Database project, that analyses the level of populism shown in political speeches from world leaders, through holistic grading, will be replicated. Furthermore, a discourse theme content analysis of the speeches which contain populist rhetoric is presented, providing a contextualization of those speeches and the specific circumstances that lead Portuguese Presidents to employ populist rethoric. The results show that Portuguese Heads of State do not use populist elements in their speeches, which are pluralist and institutional as a whole. |
