A 1ª sinfonia para banda de Joaquim Luiz Gomes: especificidades da linguagem e proposta de reedição e interpretação

Abstract

Até ao início do século XX o género Sinfonia estava consignado à formação de Orquestra Sinfónica, na sua estrutura organizacional constituída pelas secções de cordas, sopros e percussão. Temos efetivamente pouca literatura deste género para sopros neste período. No entanto, em meados do século XX foram muitos os compositores que começaram a escrever obras sinfónicas para orquestras de sopros e percussão. Desta feita, surge a necessidade de perceber como este género surgiu em Portugal, uma vez que grande parte da criação do reportório para banda anterior a meados do século XX, centrou-se sobejamente em marchas, suites, rapsódias e transcrições de obras originalmente escritas para Orquestra Sinfónica. O desafio deste trabalho de investigação concentra-se na 1ª Sinfonia para banda de Joaquim Luiz Gomes, com o objetivo de perceber as motivações de criação do referido compositor deste género em concreto, assim como apresentar, como mero exercício académico, uma proposta editorial e interpretativa da mesma. Para o efeito, e para uma melhor compreensão da obra em causa, a análise focar-se-á em especificidades de linguagem e técnicas utilizadas pelo compositor, tendo em conta aspetos como: estrutura, forma, melodia, textura, ritmo e harmonia.

Until the beginning of the twentieth century the Symphony genre was consigned to the formation of the Symphony Orchestra, in its organizational structure consisting of the strings, winds and percussion sections. We do have very little literature of this kind for wind in this period. However, in the mid-twentieth century many composers began writing symphonic works for wind and percussion orchestras. This time, there is a need to understand how this genre emerged in Portugal, since much of the creation of the repertoire for the band prior to the mid-twentieth century, focused largely on marches, suites, rhapsodies and transcriptions of works originally written for Symphonic Orchestra. The challenge of this research work focuses on the 1st Symphony for band by Joaquim Luiz Gomes, with the objective of understanding the motivations of creation of this particular composer of this genre, as well as presenting, as a mere academic exercise, an editorial and interpretative proposal of the same. For this purpose, and for a better understanding of the work in question, the analysis will focus on language specificities and techniques used by the composer, taking into account aspects such as: structure, form, melody, texture, rhythm and harmony.
