O conhecimento dessas novas gerações e o
Today, profound transformations are taking place in society because of increasing technological development. The Web 2.0, or Social Web, is a powerful agent of these transformations, creating a true Network Society that has progressively transformed the daily lives of individuals. The emergence of Generations (Y and Z), accustomed to a networked existence, has thus been forged. Higher Education institutions have tried to incorporate in their teaching and learning processes, new tools that seek a better adaptation to the new generations that come to them. The knowledge of these new generations and the resulting impact on the design and operation of e-Learning 2.0 scenarios, as well as the assessment of the contribution of their use in learning, are topics that have deserved special attention from many institutions. The research work described in this thesis was carried out during two semesters - the first semesters of the school years 2010/2011 and 2018/2019 at the Department of Communication and Art of the University of Aveiro, with the students who in those school years entered the New Communication Technologies course. The objectives underlying this work included: deepening the knowledge about the profile of new students entering higher education and checking whether they fit into the stereotypes of the Y and Z generations; characterizing these new students as to their use of technology (in personal/social and school/academic contexts); characterizing their expectations as to the use of that technology in higher education, and informing the design and operationalization of e-Learning 2.0 scenarios that effectively contribute to the learning of these students. The research showed that the entrance in Higher Education was a moment of diversification, consolidation, and deepening, of their relationship with the technology and the use they make of it. The specificities of a course such as New Communication Technologies, pose additional challenges to the students, which led to a greater networked experience, with different exploitation of already known applications, and others that went beyond those that dominated the daily lives of these students. In their experiences with technology during their first semesters, students valued, among other features: flexibility in the following of activities and accessing content; simplicity and immediacy in interactions with other actors; and the development of new skills, very useful for using and taking advantage of technologies in different contexts of their present and future lives. |
