During the teaching internship in the academic year of 2018/2019 there was the need to analyse the oral speech of 11th level students from the area of Humanities in the discipline of Spanish Initiation. We intended to analyse the presence of Mother Tongue (MT), which is Portuguese, in their oral speech as well as to identify the processes of its use. As a substantial element of classroom’s environment, oral communication is a complex skill that embraces strategies of mediation and meta communication as a way to enable intercomprehension. The use of MT is one of these strategies, which, in the last two centuries, has motivated movements in favour and against its use as a pedagogical resource. Despite all the theories and reflections around the present theme, the use of MT int the classroom of Foreign Language (FL) is not peaceful. In the theoretical framework of the present work we intended to reunite different perspectives about the theme as a way to understand the benefits and limitations of this use. Cornerstone authors from the second half of the 20th century were read, as well as recent bibliography. The readings revealed that the use of MT can be considered a pedagogical resource when included in the processes of interlinguistic influence. Thus, two processes of interlinguistic influence were analysed: transference, which consists of the use of MT as a vehicle to understand FL; and interference, which occurs when there is a transportation of structures from the MT to the FL and those structures are used as part of the FL, when in fact they are not. After the consideration of the theories around the topic, we developed the project, which consists of a case study. The instruments for data collection consisted of, in a first stage, observation grids for the understanding of the micro context and of the interactions between teacher-students and, in a second stage, the record and transcription of four Spanish lessons. With the results, we concluded that the students seem to use MT as a meta communicative tool to understand functional aspects of the lesson and of its activities, as well as to express their opinions about the themes of the unit. There is also use of MT for transference, which occurs, mostly, in moments of translation, requests of translation and validation of what students think the words/expressions mean. Although it presents less interventions, we should also consider the use of MT as interference, mostly when students pronounce Spanish words in a Portuguese accent, as well as the conjugation of Spanish verbs as they would conjugate in Portuguese.
