The present report is related to the use of songs for learning foreign language vocabulary. Its purposes are to verify if this resource influences the learning of new words and to understand some of its potentialities, as well as some of its limitations. In order to meet the set purposes, a didactical intervention project was developed in a 4th grade English class of primary education. This project was divided into five sessions that were based on the hearing of several songs which contained the vocabulary that was intended to explore. Following a quasi-experimental methodology, eight students from this class were randomly selected to perform a pre-test, prior to the sessions, and a post-test, after the sessions. In addition, a control group from a different class was used, which also performed these two tests, to compare to which extent songs have a significant effect in vocabulary learning. Through the control group, the analysis and interpretation of the pre and post-test, the worksheets and a questionnaire survey, it was concluded that songs influence vocabulary learning and may be a very useful resource for improving pronunciation. It was also possible to conclude that the support of the respective videos and/or imagens, while listening to songs, is a fundamental aspect for students’ motivation and learning, making this resource possibly more effective. In addition, it was concluded that most of the mistakes made by students have a cross-linguistic influence dimension and that it is essential to exercise vocabulary so that it is more easily memorized. It also seems to have become clear that students like the presence of songs in a classroom context, but that there are other resources that they prefer. |
