Traduzindo mundos : os mortos na narrativa de Mia Couto

Abstract

O presente trabalho propõe-se fazer uma reflexão sobre o maravilhoso na narrativa de Mia Couto, em especial sobre o papel central dos mortos e a forma como estes interagem com os vivos, revelando-se os tradutores, junto destes, das palavras dos antepassados. Para tal, estruturou-se o texto em três partes. Na primeira parte, pretendemos apontar as diferentes fases da literatura moçambicana e as suas principais linhas, nela inserindo a obra de Mia Couto. Na segunda parte, procurámos integrar a literatura moçambicana em geral e a narrativa de Mia Couto em particular na corrente do Realismo Mágico, marcado pela co-ocorrência do real e do maravilhoso, conceito que abordamos criticamente, pondo em evidência o seu carácter de sobrenatural aceite. Ainda na segunda parte, propusemo-nos analisar as manifestações do maravilhoso na obra narrativa de Mia Couto, relacionando-as com a sua intenção de construção de uma identidade moçambicana assente no questionamento de modelos de pensamento racionalistas e na tematização de um imaginário tradicional que privilegia o mito como forma de representação do real. Na terceira parte, começámos por fazer uma reflexão sobre as concepções da morte na África negra, realçando as suas principais linhas de força. Pusemos em destaque o carácter fluido da barreira entre a vida e a morte, vista não como um momento de ruptura mas como uma continuação da existência, sob outra forma, no Além, crença que se reflecte na forma como os vivos se relacionam com os mortos, aceitando naturalmente a sua intervenção nos assuntos correntes do quotidiano e buscando neles a solução para os problemas com que se confrontam. Analisámos, igualmente, os rituais que se prendem com a morte, explorando a sua dimensão simbólica. Finalmente, destacámos a importância de que se reveste a crença num mundo invisível, povoado pelos espíritos dos mortos que protegem, orientam, cuidam mas também punem os seus descendentes quando estes não os recordam ou respeitam. No segundo capítulo da última parte, que constitui o âmago do nosso trabalho, propusemo-nos analisar precisamente a tematização, na obra coutista, das crenças dos povos moçambicanos sobre a morte e os mortos, defendendo a tese de que o convívio estreito entre os vivos e os mortos reflecte a cosmovisão tradicional que, desta forma, é recuperada e dignificada. Além disso, a interacção que se estabelece entre os vivos e os mortos serve a ideia central, defendida por Mia Couto em toda a sua obra, de que a construção do futuro de Moçambique deve assentar num diálogo, difícil mas necessário, entre a modernidade e a tradição, isto é, os valores e saberes herdados de um passado longínquo e mítico, que os mortos transmitem aos vivos, traduzindolhes a sabedoria e as leis dos antepassados, seus pais originais.

The present work aims at studying the central importance of the marvelous in Mia Couto’s narrative work, with special emphasis on the main role of death and the dead, and the way they interact with the living, translating to them the words of their ancestors. To do this, we divided our work in three distinctive parts. In the first part, we pointed out the different phases and main themes of Mozambican literature, contextualizing Mia Couto’s literary production. In the second part, we tried to affiliate Mozambican literature in general and Mia Couto’s work in particular with Magical Realism, a literary mode characterized by the coexistence of the real and the marvelous, literary concept that we analyse critically, emphasizing its definition as the supernatural accepted. We also analysed the manifestations of the marvelous in Mia Couto’s narrative work, connecting them with his objective of building a Mozambican identity based on the questioning of racionalist models of thought and on the literary representation of a traditional imaginary that gives primacy to myth as a means of representing reality. In the third part, we made an analysis of the concept of death in black Africa, highlighting its most important characteristics. We referred to the fluid character of the border between life and death, showing that, for Africans, death is not the end but the continuation, under a different form and in the Afterlife, of life. Accordingly, the living naturally accept the intervention of the dead in their daily affairs and search in them the answers for their problems. We also referred to the rituals connected with death, emphasizing their symbolic dimension. Finally, we highlighted the importance of the belief in an invisible world, inhabited by the spirits of the dead who protect, lead, look after, but also punish the living when they forget or disrespect them. In the second chapter of the last part, we analyse the way Mia Couto deals with the African beliefs about death and the dead, showing that it constitutes a means of reflecting traditional systems of thought, characterized by the strong belief in the intervention of the supernatural world of the spirits in daily life. It also illustrates Mia Couto’s main idea that the future of Mozambique can only be conceived and made better by the difficult, but necessary, dialog between modernity and tradition, i.e., the values and knowledge inherited from a remote and mythical past, that the dead communicate to the living, translating to them the wisdom and the laws of the ancestors, their original fathers.
