Abstract: | Pierre Mac Orlan, Jules Supervielle, Alain-Fournier, Jean Cocteau, Jean Giono,
Pierre Mac Orlan, Jules Supervielle, Alain-Fournier, Jean Cocteau, Jean Giono, Marcel Aymé, André Dhôtel, Julien Green, Julien Gracq, Yves Bonnefoy and Michel Tournier are the 20th century authors that, amidst many others, we have chosen, in the hope that, by developing a new approach of selected works – namely Le Grand Meaulnes, Le Quai des Brumes, Les Enfants Terribles, L’Enfant de la haute mer, Le visionnaire, Au château d’Argol, Le Passemuraille, Mort d’un personnage, Le pays où l’on n’arrive jamais, Le Roi des Aulnes, L’Arrière-pays – , we could shed some light on a new dimension they fully illustrate: magical realism. We have then sought to complement our reflection through analysis of cinematic narrative, choosing the films Le Sang d’un poète, Les Disparus de Saint -Agil, Le Quai des Brumes, Les Visiteurs du soir, L’Eternel retour, Les Portes de la nuit, La Belle et la Bête, Les Enfants terribles, Orphée, Le Passe-muraille, Le Grand Meaulnes, Le Roi des Aulnes and Le Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain as a representative sample. In the first section, we have begun by elucidating the origin of the concept referred to as magical realism. In view of the extensive theoretical production, both European and South American, it gave rise to, we have taken it as the starting point to disentangle the terminological complexity imbedded in it. We have also surveyed the reasons why the term has been banned from French scholarship, simultaneously attempting to trace down its presence in different literary contexts (such as romanticism or realism) or authors (such as Baudelaire, Rimbaud or Maeterlinck). We have also sought to set the dividing line between magical realism and «real maravilloso», on the one hand, and science fiction, on the other. Lastly, we have established suitable correspondences between this new notion and the conceptual realms of dream, marvellous and the supernatural. In the second section, we have developed a thorough analysis of the selected literary works, aiming to show that they are all dependent upon an alternative order underlying the creation of an ambiguous universe, fractured between the visible and the invisible, the apparent and the concealed, i.e., reality and dream. Ingrained within the narrative, a force binds those two antagonistic worlds together, so as to lure the reader through magic, the secret of which he is compelled, through an act of interpretative cooperation, to find for himself. Because they are in open conflict with either logic or reason, both narrators and/or characters are able to sort out any sign or decipher any message pertaining to the empirical world, thereby expressing it by means of a creative activity akin to dream processes. We have finally approached the magical realistic imagination by referring to the antinomy on which it is grounded: on the one hand, we have gathered evidence proving the emergence of a hidden world behind the world; we have accounted for the fusion of dream and reality, by focussing on such themes as the initiation quest and the magical digression, attempting to show how the search for an utopian elsewhere (lost childhood, love, a never-never land) inevitably encompasses an intricate juxtaposition of themes (adulthood, loneliness, love, the absurd), always culminating in death. Lastly, in spite of all effort to account for the illustrative relevance of the literary texts chosen, we have endeavoured to provide a (tentative) definition of magical realism in French literature. |
