Natural Language Interfaces are distinguishably regarded as the closest existing interface to natural human communication. For this reason, when it comes to User Experience, their benefits are clear. Despite that, it is also known that the process of creating such interfaces is extremely challenging in nature, mainly due to the extremely large amounts of high-quality data needed to make them work reliably. Among the different methods used for data collection, the Crowdsourcing approach has become increasingly popular due to its ability to collect large amounts of data, in a short period of time, at reduced costs. Crowdsourcing as a concept is highly customizable and, for that reason, applicable to a wide range of domains, including human speech data collection. This study describes the usage of a Crowdsourcing platform as a data collection tool to help build Natural Language Interfaces for Interactive Television systems. Specifically, the solution implemented during the development of this document was created with the objective of massively collecting oral commands which represent natural interactions with the television. The platform comprised of a mobile application, used by participants to submit data, and a web portal, used for data monitoring and dynamic configuration of the platform’s elements. In addition, the concepts of gamification and monetary reward were introduced as an additional incentive to maximize participant engagement. The results of the evaluation experiment revealed that the combination of the incentive mechanisms and implemented functionalities provided an avenue capable of generating high quality data, with high levels of participant satisfaction. However, the results also revealed that the maximization of the data collection potential of the platform is dependent on the correct configuration of the incentive mechanisms, which can be different, depending on the used Crowd.
