Tradução ao serviço da tecnologia e da segurança automóvel

Abstract

Os automóveis são ferramentas fulcrais para o funcionamento e desenvolvimento de culturas. Um dos aspectos mais importantes num automóvel é a sua segurança: quanto melhor equipado estiver um automóvel, com dispositivos de segurança, maior é a probabilidade de reduzir o impacto dos acidentes. Existem muitos artigos redigidos em Inglês que abordam os sistemas de segurança. No entanto, é imperativo que esta informação surja, também, acessível/disponível em língua portuguesa. Este projecto final de Mestrado surge, assim, como a oportunidade de propor um trabalho que faz a ponte entre o domínio da tradução e o domínio da segurança automóvel e no qual existe, simultaneamente, uma ligação à área da Saúde. Este projecto foca um aspecto essencial mas que só muito recentemente começou a fazer parte da tecnologia de segurança automóvel: os dispositivos anti-“golpe de chicote”. Apesar de a lesão do “golpe de chicote” ser bastante comum, a informação disponível em português, sobre o tema, é algo escassa. Daí, a utilidade do projecto que aqui se apresenta e que teve por base um documento do Euro NCAP (instituição europeia que avalia a segurança dos automóveis), cuja tecnicidade, a nível do vocabulário, exigiu a criação de um glossário. Este relatório visa mostrar as diversas etapas do projecto, desde o seu o enquadramento, à sua descrição, às ferramentas utilizadas, ao modo como as dificuldades foram ultrapassadas, até a uma reflexão crítica sobre o impacto que a tecnologia representa na realização da tradução

ABSTRACT: Vehicles are central to the functioning of society and the development of cultures. One of the most important aspects of a vehicle is its safety. The more safety features a vehicle has, the less likely it is that there will be fatalities from accidents. Many articles exist on safety features in vehicles in English. However, there is a need to make this information available in Portuguese. The possibilities of carrying out a final project for the masters provided an opportunity to make a connection between translation, vehicle safety and health. This project focuses on something that has only recently begun to be part of vehicle safety technology namely, anti-whiplash devices. Whiplash is very common but as there is very little information available in Portuguese, this translation project was necessary. A document from the Euro NCAP site (European institution which evaluates vehicle safety) was the basis for this project. The article translated contains quite technical language which made it a difficult task but a glossary for this area was produced. This report discusses the various strategies used in the translation process. The scope and description of the project, the tools used, and the way in which the difficulties were overcome are presented together with a critical reflection on the translation process using modern technology.
