A inspiração chinesa nos temas da faiança portuguesa do século XVII

Abstract

O presente estudo insere-se num campo de estudos interdisciplinar, envolvendo principalmente duas culturas, dois sistemas sociais, dois sistemas filosóficos, duas modalidades artísticas, dois espaços de investigação, e visa responder às seguintes questões: (i) como é que os portugueses compreendiam a cultura chinesa no século XVII e (ii) como é que essa compreensão influenciou a criação artística portuguesa, sobretudo a manufatura da faiança portuguesa naquela época? A partir de um corpus de peças de faiança portuguesa do século XVII com temas de inspiração chinesa existentes em museus públicos e em coleções privadas e mediante a comparação dialética e hermenêutica das narrativas culturais chinesas presentes na faiança portuguesa e na porcelana chinesa, é possível atingir uma compreensão cultural baseada numa perspetiva global. O estudo é constituído pelo estudo dos motivos animais, vegetalistas, de figura humana, shanshui, arquitetónicos e gráficos. Os resultados obtidos nesta pesquisa pretendem fortalecer o estudo da faiança portuguesa do século XVII por meio do aprofundamento de estudos anteriores. Desta forma, pretende-se contribuir para a renovação das teorias dos estudos culturais e das relações internacionais em termos de diálogos e influências entre o Oriente e o Ocidente, a fim de fortalecer o desenvolvimento contínuo das compreensões interculturais.

The present study is situated within an interdisciplinary realm of research, involving mainly two cultures, two social systems, two philosophical systems, two artistic modalities, two investigation spaces, aiming to answer the following questions: (i) how did the Portuguese understand Chinese culture in the 17th century and (ii) how did this understanding influence Portuguese artistic creation, especially the manufacture of faience in those times? Cultural understanding based on a global perspective was achieved by means of the organization of a corpus of 17th century Portuguese faience pieces with Chinese-inspired themes which are held in public museums or private collections as well as the dialectic and hermeneutic comparisons of the Chinese cultural narratives present in Portuguese faience and in Chinese porcelain. This study is composed of animal motifs, vegetalist motifs, human figure motifs, shanshui motif, architectural motifs and geographical motifs. The results obtained in this research introduce new energy in in the study of 17th century Portuguese faience by means of the identification of undetermined or ambiguous findings of previous studies. Thus, they contribute to the renewal of cultural studies theories and international relations in terms of dialogs and influences between East and West with the aim to strengthen the ongoing development of intercultural understanding.
