Rostos do fim: tradição e alegoria em As intermitências da morte, de José Saramago

Abstract

No romance As intermitências da Morte, de José Saramago, publicado em 2005, o escritor ficcionaliza, em registo alegórico, o tópico da finitude humana, recuperando, para esse efeito, tradições culturais e literárias, sobretudo de raiz judaico-cristã, associadas à representação do culto da morte. Na presente dissertação, traça-se, num primeiro momento, uma genealogia das representações da morte do mundo antigo à contemporaneidade, destacando os elementos retomados no romance saramaguiano, por forma a esclarecer o modo como o autor recupera ou contesta o imaginário ocidental sobre a finitude humana. Num segundo momento, serão analisadas as estratégias narrativas, simbólicas e alegóricas de representação da morte patentes em As Intermitências da Morte, com particular destaque para o desenvolvimento da intriga e o estatuto da personagem. Finalmente, será problematizada a incidência da ideologia do autor, designadamente na esfera política e religiosa, na configuração ou subversão das mitologias da morte presentes no romance.

In José Saramago's novel Death with Interruptions, published in 2005, the writer allegorically fictionalizes the topic of human finitude, by recovering cultural and literary traditions, especially those rooted in Judeo-Christian culture, associated with the representation of the cult of death. In this dissertation, we first outline the representations of death from the ancient world to contemporary times, highlighting those elements present in the novel under analysis, in order to illuminate the way the author reshapes or challenges the western imagination about human death, namely in its Christian matrix. Secondly, we will analyse the symbolic and allegorical strategies of representation of death made evident in Saramago’s novel, with particular emphasis on the development of the plot and the status of characters. Finally, the author's ideology will be problematized, especially in its political and religious dimensions, so as to assess the configuration or subversion of the mythologies of death in the novel.
