estrutural e qualidade habitacional, reconhecendo a importância e o
demolidos.
O principal objetivo desta tese é apresentar a investigação realizada sobre a
evolução do sistema construtivo, desde o período final do Mandato Otomano e
Francês, avaliar as principais anomalias da construção e o comportamento
higrotérmico para apoiar futuras recomendações de conservação. A informação
investigada in situ e registada usando métodos não destrutivos.
Finalmente, a caracterização detalhada
As
Conserving the architectural structures of heritage buildings has become an issue of great importance around the world. It is the result of the need to improve existing buildings, recognizing the importance and the knowledge of its traditional technics. The Ottoman buildings in Beirut are a unique example of traditional bourgeoisie architecture in the 19th and early 20th century. Nevertheless, they have been subjected to lack of maintenance and repair which led to processes of degradation with time, compromising their use and the purpose for which they were built. In this way, a very important Beirut heritage is in risk and the most important source of information of ancient construction systems is in consequence disappearing. The main goal of this thesis is to outline the entire evolution of the construction system from the late Ottoman and French Mandate period and assessing the major construction defects and thermal behavior to support future Conservation recommendations. Given several information will be systematized to intend a contribution with a global overview of the essential aspects. This can influence and produce changes on the methods of rehabilitation and compatibility of materials which is an issue of great importance around the world, particularly in the most developed societies. Nowadays, conserving the architectural structures of Built Heritage is dealing with the need of retrofitting existing buildings, as well as to emphasize the recognition of the importance and the knowledge of their traditional technics. Specific methodologies using laboratory tests and monitoring with data loggers was employed and optimized to cross information and achieve further results in the process of characterization of this Built Heritage. Firstly, a characterization of Beirut architectural typology and its construction system was traced and recorded using non-destructive methods. Secondly, the use of case studies according to a pre-selection of seven Ottoman buildings and two French buildings was studied and surveyed to accomplish the strategy used in the construction for the building to be well understood. Finally, the intended deeply characterization of the 1840-1940 period of construction system recorded the ancient innovations used in these buildings by detailed illustration. This provided an understanding of the construction systems and methods used in their making which can aid future conservation efforts and encourage the conservation of these buildings which form an important link in the historic evolution of structure and architecture in Beirut. Conservation recommendations specific to this Built Heritage is a goal of the thesis, considering the comparison with the actual practices in the field, with the aim to conclude over applicability and accuracy of the methodologies, more compatible methods of intervention which can guarantee the preservation of the cultural value of this buildings after the retrofitting processes. |
