O Indiculo Universal : edição e estudo

Abstract

Este trabalho tem por objecto a edição e o estudo do Indiculo Universal (1716), texto pedagógico de informação lexicográfica na versão Português-Latim elaborada pelo jesuíta António Franco a partir do original francês de François Pomey. O estudo começa com uma nota biobibliográfica dos autores e com um resumo do que foi o ensino dos Jesuítas até ao séc. XVIII bem como do espaço histórico-cultural da recepção do Indiculo, seguido de um apontamento sobre os dicionários escolares por domínios temáticos existentes em Portugal entre 1551 e 1762. Referem-se os aspectos lexicográficos do Indiculo Universal, que é definido como um pequeno dicionário temático bilingue (português-latim) de tipo enciclopédico: a sua estrutura e organização lexicográfica, a organização semântica, os assuntos ou temas tratados e as palavras mais frequentes. Alude-se, finalmente, às três edições conhecidas que teve e faz-se um breve confronto com o Indiculus Universalis francês. Na conclusão destaca-se o interesse lexicográfico desta obra para o estudo da língua e da sociedade das centúrias de setecentos e oitocentos. A segunda parte do trabalho é toda preenchida com a edição diplomática do Indiculo Universal, respeitando integralmente todo o texto da impressão de 1716 – edição princeps.

ABSTRACT: This work is divided in two parts: in the first one there’s a presentation and study of François Pomey’s Indiculo Universal (1716), translated from French and added by António Franco; in the second part there is a digital edition of this book. The study starts with a biobibliographical note of the authors and with a summary of the education of the Jesuits until the XVIII century, as well as of the Indiculo´s historical and cultural background, followed by a note about school thematic dictionaries in Portugal between 1551 and 1762. Some lexicographical aspects of this small bilingual (portuguese-latin) thematic dictionary of encyclopaedic type are mentioned: its structure and lexicographical organization, the semantic organization, the subjects treated and the most frequent words. We allude, finally, to the three Indiculo’s known editions and make a brief confrontation with the French Indiculus Universalis. In the conclusion the lexicographical interest of this workmanship for the study of the language and the society of the XVII and XVIII centuries is distinguished. The second part of the work is all filled with the diplomatic edition of the Indiculo Universal, respecting integrally all the text of the impression of 1716 - princeps edition.
