The main goal of the present paper is to assess the perception and attitudes of the residents of Ribeira, in Porto city, regarding the impacts of tourism. In order to reach the referred goal, a bibliographic research was made, starting with the overtourism phenomenon and namely the description of some examples of destinations with excess of tourism, like Veneza and Benidorm. Then, a specific research about the perception of the residents regarding the impacts of mass tourism and their attitudes towards tourism was presented, as well as the factors that influence the perceptions of the impacts of mass tourism. Based on this theoretical reflection, an investigation model was developed intended to assess the factors that influence the perception of the residents and their attitudes regarding tourism impacts. The methodology of this investigation was settled on primary data collection through a questionnaire to the region residents. Through direct administration 220 questionnaires were obtained between august and september of 2019. The obtained results of the referred investigation allowed observing that the residents of the Ribeira already have the perception of more negative impacts, especially at an economic level (habitation prices increase), social level (traffic and noise increase) and at an environmental level (pollution increase), than positive impacts. The residents also consider that tourism has a small contribute to the improvement of their quality of life. Nevertheless, they reveal that they enjoy receiving visitants, however, they proved to be more reluctant with the fact of receiving more visitants. These results reveal that the tourism in this city has already reached a saturation point that needs to be inverted through good policies at the planning and visitants management level in order to not destroy one of the main attractions, the residents and their hospitality.
