do minério a partir do subssolo naquela região.
efeito no ambiente geoquímico superficial.
actividade mineira passada e presente nesta região.
fenómenos ocorridos no ambiente geoquímico superficial na área deste estudo. The Neves Corvo Mine is situated in one of the world’s most important massive sulphide metallogenic provinces, the Iberian Pyrite Belt and is one of the few mines still operating in Europe. This mine is the most important mineral deposit discovered in Portugal and one of the most important copper deposits in the world and hence, exerts an important socio-economic impact in the region. The objectives of this study are to characterise the geochemical behaviour of mobile elements in a system where the existing equilibrium has been disturbed by ore extraction at Neves Corvo and 6 other ancient mining works, and thereby evaluate its effect on the superficial geochemical environment. The geochemical behaviour of Al, As, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, S, Sn and Zn were determined since these are largely influenced in the system rock-soil-sedimentplant within the study area and because these elements are directly or indirectly linked to past and present ore extraction processes in the region. In this study were determined different sets of elements in the total soil, in different soil fractions, in Cistus ladanifer and in sediments. Cistus ladanifer was chosen because of its greater abundance in the study area implying its better adaptation to the environment. The study revealed that some elements chosen had particular behaviour and that Al and Fe behaved similarly in these soils, whereas in Cu and Zn, there were signs of incompatibility with respect to absorption by Cistus ladanifer plants. As (III) and (V) species were determined due to the toxicity that these two inorganic forms of As can present to the Cistus ladanifer. The study showed that the plant predominantly assimilates and accumulates the organic forms of As and does not exceed the levels of toxicity generated by the inorganic As species. The identification of anomalous concentrations of Cu in soils was studied through statistical methods to check whether Cu concentration was solely due to the rocks from which they are derived or whether these are mining-induced. The study demarcates areas considered anomalous through a cut-off concentration. Multivariate statistics of a much larger range of elements in soils (and sediments) showed that there are groups of elements that can be correlated with the Volcano- Sedimentary Formation from which the soils are derived and in some cases with areas disturbed by mining activities of these same Formation. Other groups of elements are more correlated to the Flysch sediments or less disturbed areas. The conclusions from this study are based on the precious historical and recent geochemical information that helps to understand some of the phenomena that have occurred in the superficial geochemical environment within the study area. |
