suspensão (MPS) permite conhecer as potenciais contribuições mineralógicas e
A MPS, constituída
ilite, caulinite, minerais argilosos expansivos (sobretudo esmectite e
generalidade, a geologia do continente adjacente, evidenciam a contribuição
fornecimento associados à erosão do litoral.
The continental shelf and upper slope between Espinho and the Mondego Cape are one of the most extensively studied sectors of the Portuguese continental margin. However, the knowledge about the sedimentary cover was so far restricted to the coarsest fractions of the surface sediments (gravel and mostly, sands) while the composition of the fine particles, which is considered an important tracer of sediment provenance, dispersion and deposition, remained unknown. This PhD dissertation was written in order to bridge this gap in knowledge, focussing on the study of the fine fractions of the surface sediments (<63 μm and <2 μm) and having as the main objectives, the identification of the principal mineralogical assemblages and the definition of their patterns of distribution in order to define the conceptual model of the present day sedimentary dynamics in the studied region. The study of the suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the Ria de Aveiro, the only lagoon-estuarine system that drains directly to the sector under analysis, allowed for the identification of the principal mineralogical contributions and the estimation of particle fluxes to the Atlantic domain. It was concluded that the SPM was constituted essentially by mica/ilite, quartz and kaolinite, and trends to be exported to the adjacent ocean during spring tides, while during neap tides, the system acts as a trap for the fine sediments. The mineralogical analyses carried out in the <63 μm fraction confirm the present day low terrigenous contribution for the continental shelf and upper slope. The results show the importance of the primary production and the contribution of the middle and outer shelf carbonate outcrops as sources of fine particles. The silt-clay fraction is dominated by calcite, followed by quartz, phyllosilicates, k-feldspars and plagioclases. The mineralogical assemblages identified in the <2 μm fraction, composed by ilite, kaolinite, expansive clay minerals (mostly smectite and interstratified illitesmectite) and chlorite, reflect the geology of the adjacent continental land, the contribution of the rivers Douro and Mondego and that of the Ria de Aveiro, as well as the supplying processes associated with littoral erosion. The patterns of mineral distribution in the studied fractions suggest the preferential transport to the north and off-shelf, and their deposition in lower energy places and/or locally protected by rock outcrops. The knowledge about the granulometry and composition of the coarse (gravel and sand) and fine fractions (silt and clay) of the surface sediments, complemented by the other data available about oceanographic conditions along the west Portuguese coast, in particular to the north of 41ºN parallel, and with the information available about the evolution of the coastline since the Last Glacial Maximum, allowed for the characterisation of the main patterns of the past and present day sedimentary dynamics in the study area. |
