ABSTRACT: This work aims is the growth of scintillator crystals for gamma radiation. The materials used were neodymium-doped mullite, bismuth germanate and lutetium orthosilicate. They were grown by the laser floating zone technique. The fibres characterization was carried out by X-ray diffraction, Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The measures were taken engaging the scintillation fibres to a photomultiplier tube, in a darkroom, using a source of gamma radiation. The mullite fibres doped with neodymium proved to be polycrystalline with a strongly anisotropic character. Crystals with a chemical composition Al2,4Si0,6O4,8 and orthorhombic structure grown along fibre axis in [001] preferential grain orientation. The thickness of the crystals decreases with growth rate and neodymium was only found in grain boundaries, which constitute an amorphous second phase. The main reason to the no scintillating gamma radiation of the mullite fibres could be the segregation of neodymium to the grain boundaries, together with the low density that induces a low stopping power. In this work fibres of bismuth germanate (BGO) were grown at different pulling rates. This fibres exhibit a monophasic nature, being Bi4Ge3O12 the crystalline phase. When excited with ultraviolet radiation (290 nm) the fibres emit light in a broadband in the blue/green region. The scintillation yield was measure varying the fibre position (vertical or horizontal), the growth rate, the number and height of the fibres. The effect of teflon coating was also studied. The experimental results had shown a higher scintillation yield in fibres grown at lower pulling rate, coated with teflon and placed horizontally. The variation of the scintillation yield according to the height and the number of fibres proved to be linear. In scope of this work lutetium orthosilicate fibres were grown also at different speeds. The scintillation yield obtained is close to the mentioned in the literature, being 2-3 times higher than BGO.por
