ABSTRACT: The main purpose of this work was to investigate the growth of 2Al2O3-SiO2 mullite fibres by the laser floating zone technique at different speeds and to characterize them me-chanically and structurally. The fibres grown at 10mm/h are single crystals, where fi-bres grown at higher speeds (40 and 100mm/h) are polycrys-talline with a cellular microstructure. The fibres are highly [001] textured with respect to the fibre axis. Scanning electron mi-croscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy were the main characterization techniques. Four point bending strength and Vickers indentation were performed at room temperature. Results shown that the me-chanical properties were strongly influenced by the residual stress state, mainly in the case of slowest pulled. A bending strength of 827MPa was the largest value, being obtained forthe polycrystalline fibre grown at the highest speed, whereasthe single crystal fibres exhibit a lower values of 579MPa. Vickers microhardness and indentation fracture toughnessshowed values in the range of 10.8-13.4GPa and 4.9-6.5MPa.m-0,5, respectively. |
