Ensinar inglês e educar para a cidadania global: uma experiência com picturebooks

Abstract

Vivemos num mundo global envolto em mudanças constantes, pelo que urge colocar, desde cedo, as crianças a par do seu papel na sociedade em que se inserem. Utilizando o Inglês, língua global, através da exploração de picturebooks com mensagens e ensinamentos ao nível da sustentabilidade do planeta, respeito e valorização pela diversidade, procurámos trabalhar rumo ao cidadão consciente do seu papel global. Visa este projeto fomentar nos alunos o gosto pela leitura como ponto de partida para aprendizagens ao nível de conhecimentos, capacidades, atitudes e valores, para que sejam atores local e globalmente, contribuindo para um mundo mais justo, inclusivo, seguro e sustentável. Desta forma, este estudo, realizado a partir de um projeto de intervenção didática desenvolvido numa turma de 4.º ano do 1.º ciclo do ensino básico, intitulado “Picture the World”, teve como objetivo compreender de que forma se pode educar para a Cidadania Global utilizando picturebooks em aulas de Inglês. A análise dos dados permitiu concluir que as crianças mostraram estar recetivas à leitura de picturebooks e às atividades de análise dos mesmos, conseguindo simultaneamente desenvolver novos conhecimentos a nível léxical, bem como retirar das leituras mensagens e ensinamentos. A proteção do ambiente, a importância da partilha, a aceitação e respeito pela diferença e a solidariedade foram os tópicos trabalhados com os alunos nas sessões de projeto, tendo estes manifestado vontade de sensibilizar outras pessoas, quando escreveram mensagens para a comunidade educativa, mostrando consciência do seu papel de cidadãos globais

We live in a global world surrounded by constant changes, so it is urgent, from an early age, to make children aware of their role in the society they are in. Using English, a global language, through the exploration of picturebooks with messages and lessons related to the planet´s sustainability, respect and valorization of diversity, we tried to work heading towards a citizen aware of his/her global role. With this project we want to foster in the students the love for reading as a starting point for learning in terms of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values to be actors locally and globally, contributing to a more just, inclusive, secure and sustainable world. Therefore, this study, carried out with a group of children in 4th grade of primary education, entitled “Picture the World”, aims to understand how we can educate for Global Citizenship using picturebooks in the English classes. The analysis of the data showed that children were receptive to the reading of picturebooks as well as to their analysis, managing, simultaneously to develop new knowledge at lexical level, as well as taking messages and lessons from them. Environment protection, the importance of sharing, accepting and respecting difference and solidarity were the topics worked on the project lessons, having the students shown willingness to raise awareness of other people when they wrote messages to the school community, showing to be conscious of their role as global citizens
