Abstract: The substance consumption behaviours among young adults, especially university students are common, as alcohol and tobacco being the substances with a higher prevalence of addictive behaviours. Considering the associated problems from consumption, it could be relevant to study consumption determinants to act within this population at all levels of prevention. So, we aim with this research “To identify the associated factors of the consumption of alcohol and tobacco among university students”. Thus, through a cross-sectional study focused on university students enrolled in the academic year of 2016/2017, a convenience sample of 338 students was obtained [51.8% were male with mean age of 20.6 years old (SD=3.4)]. A data collection instrument was used, composed by a sociodemographic questionnaire and by variables related to alcohol and tobacco consumption [Fagerström test for Nicotine Dependence, Drinking Motives Questionnaire-Revised (DMQ-R), Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) e Drinking and Abstaining Behaviors Questionnaire (DABQ)]. The results showed adequate psychometric properties of DABQ and ASSIST to assess, respectively, the social norms related to alcohol consumption and; tobacco, alcohol and cannabis involvement. Also, it was observed that alcohol and tobacco consumption was associated with environmental (parents and friends consumption), psychosocial (descriptive and injunctive norms), biologic (age) and lifestyle (physical activity) factors. This research contributes to the scientific evidence, having as principal implication for research and practice, its contribution to the knowledge of the factors related to alcohol and tobacco consumption among university students. By observing the evidence of this research, the consumption prevalence and the substance involvement, future works should be focused on the development and application of intervention projects (e.g. health education), to enhance health related knowledge and behaviours; to demystify the perceived social norms and empower the students to develop protective behavioural strategies
