impregnação do papel decorativo. The invention of high pressure laminates, HPL, remotes to the XX century, and consists in an overlap of paper impregnated by resins, that after being exposed to high pressure and temperature flows and allows the sheets of paper to bond. Creating a new, resistant and highly stable, material of added value, which represents an elevated commercial value. The detection of flaws, like surface defects, buy the costumers can reduce its high commercial value. So, to diminish the commercial impact of the defects in its economy, SIR- SONAE Indústria de Revestimentos, decided to characterize and chemically analyze them, as well as it’s probable origin. With this in mind, the defects were identified and could be divided in three different types: The light color surfaces, that revealed yellowish regions, the dark color surfaces that showed regions with different texture and shade, and lastly the dark color ones in which is visible the presence of lighter vertical stripes. In order to fulfill the main goal samples of the identified defects were subjected to different optical techniques such as UV-vis reflectance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy FTIR-ATR, Raman spectroscopy, AFM, pyrolysis GC/MS and contact angle analysis by the sessile drop method. The obtained results allowed to conclude that in the light colored laminates the yellowish stains where caused by phenolic compounds that migrate to the HPL surface due to an inefficient impregnation process. Despite of this information it was not possible to understand the true identity of this phenolic compounds. As for the black HPL that showed regions with different textures and shades, it was perceptible that the non-uniformity of the regions was not caused by influence of external components. Instead it was caused by an insufficient cycle pressing temperature. Finally, the stripped samples surface analysis did not show the presence of unexpected compounds. Its heterogeneity was caused by a poor impregnated system that leaded to a heterogeneous coated surface. |
