Determinantes da intensidade energética em Portugal

Abstract

O presente trabalho propõe-se determinar e examinar os determinantes da Intensidade Energética em Portugal. É analisada a evolução da Intensidade Energética em Portugal, no período 1995 a 2015, primeiro, fazendo uma análise de decomposição através do método LMDI, separando o efeito estrutural do efeito da intensidade, e depois num segundo passo, aplicando o modelo econométrico BVAR, para perceber que variáveis - PIB per capita, peso do VAB da indústria no PIB, Preço da Energia e Fator Total de Produtividade - afetam a Intensidade Energética portuguesa. É possível observar que é o efeito intensidade que tem mais peso na Intensidade Energética, sendo que o efeito estrutural tem um impacto negativo. O PIB, Fator Total de Produtividade e Preço da Energia têm uma influência negativa na Intensidade Energética, sendo o peso do VAB da indústria no PIB a única variável com uma influência positiva. Neste sentido, as políticas energéticas a adotar devem dar maior destaque a setores chave da economia.

The present work proposes to determine and examine the determinants of Energy Intensity in Portugal. It’s made an analysis of the evolution of Energy Intensity in Portugal, for the period 1995-2015, firstly, making a decomposition analysis using the LMDI method, separating the structural effect from the intensity effect, and secondly, estimating a BVAR model to understand which variables - GDP per capita, share of value-added in GDP, Energy Prices and Total Factor Productivity - affect the Portuguese energy intensity. It’s possible to observe that it is the intensity effect that has more weight in the Energy Intensity, and the structural effect has a negative impact. The GDP, Total Factor Productivity and Energy Price have a negative influence on Energy Intensity, and the share of value-added in GDP is the only variable with a positive influence. In this sense, the energy policies to be adopted should give greater emphasis to some key-sectors.
