This work attempts to study the impact of forest fire and management practices in Eucalyptus globulus Labill and Pinus pinaster Aiton forested terrain of the Agueda Basin, northern Portugal, on hydrological and hydrochemical processes. We developed a nested research design approach incorporating the measurement of hydrological and hydrochemica processes and properties at different spatial and temporal scales. Forest management practices, through their influence on vegetation cover, the litter layer cover and soil properties, are demonstrated to be responsible for important differences in hydrological and hydrochemical processes. The varying vegetation canopies associated with different forest types and management practices, and at different times following forest fire, are shown to result in differing interception losses and capture of atmospheric solutes. For example, both processes are more efficient in Pinus pinaster Aiton than in Eucalyptus globulus Labill. stands. Nutrient exchange with plant tissues is found to vary not only with forest species, but also with the surface area (of foliage, woody matter and litter) in contact with water. The impact of the litter layer on quick slope runoff processes (overland flow and througMow) varies with its depth on the soil surface, which in turn is dependent on the comparative rates of accumulation and decomposition at the soil surface for the two species at different stages in their life history. |
