A Internet como fonte de informação de apoio à actividade docente no ensino superior de turismo em Portugal

Abstract

Esta dissertação procura problematizar a influência que a Internet tem enquanto fonte de informação no âmbito da actividade docente do ensino superior público em Portugal. Face ao crescente volume de informação em circulação e à sua rápida desactualização nas sociedades de hoje, questionase muitas vezes que recursos é que estão disponíveis para satisfazer as necessidades de informação dos seus utilizadores. Assim, começamos por abordar os aspectos teóricos relacionados com a importância da informação e a sua gestão nas organizações competitivas, enquadrando o papel que tem vindo a assumir nos estabelecimentos de ensino. Apresentamos, também, o contexto de desenvolvimento da Internet e as problemáticas associadas à massificação da sua utilização enquanto veículo universal de difusão de informação, considerando as diversas ferramentas de recolha de informação disponíveis e os critérios de qualidade utilizados para gerir essa mesma informação. Seguidamente são apresentados os resultados obtidos com a aplicação de questionários, feitos junto dos docentes dos cursos superiores de turismo, através dos quais se procurou analisar o contexto em que a Internet é utilizada para apoiar a sua actividade profissional. Os resultados obtidos revelaram que este público apresenta uma grande apetência para procurar várias áreas de informação sobre o turismo na Internet, embora com um grau de satisfação pouco elevado quanto ao rácio quantidade/qualidade de informação já procurada, mas ainda não a elegem como a principal fonte de informação no âmbito da sua actividade profissional. Por último, apresentamos uma proposta para o desenvolvimento de um sistema de informação sobre turismo para colmatar algumas das necessidades de informação que constantemente se colocam aos docentes.

The present thesis aims at finding how the Internet, as an information source, influences the professional activity of lecturers teaching in the courses in Tourism within Higher Education in Portugal. As the amount of information and its outdating grow faster and faster in present-day society, we often ask ourselves what the resources available are, so that the needs of users can be satisfied. Firstly, we shall view the theoretical aspects related to the importance of information and its management in competitive organisations, and we shall try to place the role of information within some kind of framework. We shall also present the context in which the Internet has developed as well as the issues associated with its massive use as a universal means of disseminating information. We shall equally consider the various tools available for the gathering of information and the criteria of quality used for the handling of it. Secondly, we shall present the results obtained from questionnaires given to lecturers in the courses in Tourism, which provided us with a context for the use of the Internet among those lecturers in their professional activity. Those results show that they use the Internet frequently and tend to visit sites which will provide them with different sorts of information on Tourism. The results also show, however, that the level of satisfaction obtained is low when compared with the quantity/quality ratio aimed for. The Internet does not constitute the lecturers’ main source of information in their professional activity yet. Finally, we shall put forward a proposal for the development of an information system in Tourism, which might fill some gaps in the information usually required by lecturers.
