ABSTRACT: Thermal insulation is one of the most effective energy conservation measures for cooling and heating in buildings. Therefore determining and selecting the optimum thickness of insulation is a important issue to take into account. Insulation of buildings has been gaining much more interest in recent years not only for the environmental effect of the consumed energy but also the high cost of energy. In countries that import most of their energy, like Portugal, energy saving and the effective usage of energy become much more important. Energy consumption for heating in different zones is too high in Portugal because buildings have a lack of insulation. Therefore, the optimum insulation thickness for different energy sources and two different life cycle times are calculated for the three different climate zones in Portugal. In this study the determination of optimum insulation thickness is based on the life cycle cost analyses. The degree-days method that is the simplest and most intuitive way of estimating the annual energy consumption of a building is also used in this study. The RCCTE - (DL 80/2006) is a new regulation of the characteristics of thermal behaviour of buildings in Portugal. This regulation demands minimum thermal qualities in building envelope. Isn’t known if the insulation thickness required in this regulation is the economic insulation thickness who takes into account local climate zone and the cost of energy. The optimum insulation thickness for external walls for 20 years of life cycle varies between 0,058 to 0,122 m in the climate zone I1, 0,075 to 0,150 m in the climate zone I2 and 0,097 to 0,188 m in the climate zone I3 depending of the energy used. For 40 years of life cycle the optimum insulation thickness for external wall varies between 0,084 to 0,166 m for climate zone I1, 0,106 to 0,204 m and for climate zone I2 and 0,135 to 0,251 m for climate zone I3. The payback period is lower than 4,6 years for 20 years of life cycle e 5,6 years for 40 years of life cycle. In other hand there are free software’s to verify the present regulation. It was shown that these software’s were not reliable whereas compared in the same situation. In these software’s the calculation of the equivalent glazing area isn’t well done compared to spreadsheet.por
