Workgroup interdependence and satisfaction from a developmental perspective: the moderating role of the group’s life cycle stage

Abstract

From a developmental perspective, workgroups adjust and modify the way they function over time. The present study aims to test, at the group level, the moderating role of the group ’ s life phase in the relationship between workgroup interdependence ties in terms of task, outcome and functions, assessed by social network density and group satisfaction. A sample of 84 teams from various companies participated in this research. The results showed that the group ’ s development phase determines the way that outcome interdependence density in teams is associated with satisfaction and reveal the existence of differences between the second and fourth development stages. Therefore, the group ’ s life cycle stage should be considered as a relevant variable in research and intervention with groups in the workplace.

Desde el punto de vista del desarrollo, los grupos de trabajo ajustan y modifican su funcionamiento a lo largo del tiempo. Este estudio pretende comprobar el rol moderador, a nivel grupal, de la fase del ciclo de vida del grupo en la relación entre los vínculos de interdependencia grupal del equipo de trabajo en términos de tareas, resultados y funciones, evaluados a través de la densidad de la red social y de la satisfacción grupal. En el estudio participaron 84 equipos de diversas empresas. Los resultados muestran que la fase de desarrollo del grupo determina el modo en que la densidad de interdependencia de resultados del grupo se relaciona con la satisfacción y revelan la existencia de diferencias entre la segunda y la cuarta fase de desarrollo grupal. Por lo tanto, la fase del ciclo de vida grupal debería tenerse en cuenta como una variable relevante en la investigación y en intervenciones con grupos de trabajo.
