Cryptocurrencies are digital means of payment, with protection against falsification, copying and modification. Bitcoin is the first and most popular crypto-currency existing and the digital coins that have appeared after bitcoin are called altcoins. Unlike exchange rates, the cryptocurrency market is unregulated, subject only to supply and demand conditions. The present work investigates the possible relationships between Bitcoin, altcoins and conventional currencies, in terms of prices and their estimated volatilities, for a period of time between August 2015 and January 2018. The empirical results obtained by estimating vector autoregressive models with error correction (VEC) and Granger causality tests allow us to conclude that there are significant correlations between the crypto-currencies under study, and there is evidence of causal relationships between them, both in the price analysis and in the level of volatilities. At the level of the volatility series, the existence of two unidirectional causal relations between the Japanese yen and Bitcoin and between the Korean won and the Ethereum was verified. These results reveal a growing cointegration between the two types of market, indicating that particular attention should be paid to the relationships that are beginning to be verified between them, being of particular interest to investors. |
