Abstract: O nojo é uma emoção básica associada à contaminação e doença.
Disgust is a basic emotion which is associated to contaminantion and disease. This emotion can be distinguished from other negative valence emotions (eg, fear), namely at the physiological domain, being the disgust usually associated with the deceleration of cardiac activity, while fear is associated with its acceleration. Disgust responses tend to be adaptive preventing the contact with objects or situations that lead to situations of danger or contamination. However, these responses may become dysfunctional, as in the self-disgust. Self-disgust can be described by the internalization of the disgust responses. People with self disgust guide the feelings of repulsion to the self-image, personality, and behavior to herself. The objective of the present study is to understand how self-disgust levels can influence performance in a memory task and the psychophysiological correlates of cardiac activity. Thus, the present work consisted in a memory task for emotional faces (happy, disgust and fear), it is expected that the participants with high levels of self disgust show better recall for disgust faces than the participants with lower levels of self disgust. The sample was selected based on the Multidimensional Self-Disgust Scale and the participants were divided in three groups: high, medium and low of self-disgust. The experimental task began with an self-awareness task in order to increase self-awareness, and then the participants had to memorize and recall emotional faces. During the experiment, cardiac activity was recorded. Behavioral results showed no significant differences between the groups and the emotions of the faces. The analysis of the cardiac activity revealed significant differences between happy and disgust, and marginally significant between fear and disgust, particularly in the high self-disgust group, only during the learning phase of the memory task. Heart rate variability analysis showed a significantly higher activation in autofocus task in relation to the learning task. of the heart rate change revealed significant differences between happy and disgust faces, particularly in the high self-disgust group. Heart rate variability analyzes were also performed and revealed a significantly greater activation in the self-focus task compared to the learning task. Concluding, in the behavioral task, the initial hypothesis was not proven. Psychophysiological data, were not consistent throughout the phases of the memory task, but suggest that there may be a differential and specific processing of the emotion of disgust by individuals with high levels of self-disgust. The heart rate variability analysis led us to realize that the activation effects caused by the autofocus task were not transferred to the memory task. To our knowledge, the present study is the first that investigate the disgust processing by the individuals with high self-disgust. In the future, more studies are necessary to better understand the relationship between the levels of self-disgust and the disgust processing.
