canal (arrastamento no fundo e suspensão).
semelhantes. The problems associated with coastal erosion, which are to a large extent along the Portuguese coast, but also as a relevant issue at global level, have a need for an immediate and urgent response, bearing in mind the harmful consequences that they cause both in the natural habitat and in the populations close to the coast. Interventions in affected areas may or may not be conservative, with different aims and short, medium or long-term prospects, for example through the construction of coastal defence structures, the use of artificial sand nourishment or the reprofiling of the coastline. All of them have in common, directly or indirectly, influence in the main process related to coastal erosion, sedimentary transport. The sedimentary process is subdivided into two types of movements related to the coastline, parallel movement (longitudinal transport) and perpendicular movement (transversal transport), however the two types of transport can occur simultaneously, due to the dynamics of the action that cause the sedimentary transport. In order to study and evaluate sediment transport, this work had as main objective to estimate and characterize the sediment transport velocity, through laboratory tests under controlled conditions, with transport occurring in a single direction. For this purpose, we used the hydraulic flume of the laboratory of Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Aveiro. In the tests, the sediment dimension, the flow rate, the slope of the flume and the method of placement of the sediments in the flume (bed load transport and suspension) were controlled. By analytical treatment of the sediment heights in the flume at different time points and sections, it was possible to obtain sediment transport velocity by crossing the results obtained for the tests with different characteristics, reaching a theoretical framework. A comparative analysis of accumulated past volumes in designated sections was done, with numerical formulations of several authors. The work carried out has shown that sediments of smaller calibre acquire higher sediment transport velocity, at the same time as larger flows and inclinations also cause higher velocities. The relation between the two sediment placement methods in the flume was not totally enlightening, yet the results obtained in both were similar. |
