Abstract: | Ao levarmos a cabo o presente estudo, pretendemos analisar as
renovar a prática pedagógica neste domínio?
urgentemente, a prática pedagógica neste domínio, considerámos pertinente
apresentar algumas sugestões pedagógico-didácticas, relativas a estratégias
estudo. This study aimed to analyse the perceptions of 5th grade students and teachers of Portuguese about: (i) reading comprehension; (ii) writing; (iii) the contribution of reading comprehension to the development of writing; (iv) strategies to improve this interaction. Our interest in working with 5th grade students is a result of the fact that they are at a stage of transition between two cycles, the 1st and the 3rd cycle, and also results of the statement, in our teaching practice, that this change usually reflects itself on their learning, that is, many students start at this time to reveal some demotivation in what concerns reading and writing. As for the teachers, it seemed important to know their perceptions about their practices and see in what way there is a relation between these two aspects, that is, between what they think and what they do as teachers. When we started our study, we knew it would be difficult to investigate about perceptions, because it is not easy to talk about people. However, we felt that this aspect was of great importance to the understanding of students’ and teachers’ school reality. Since the beginning it seemed it would be essential to approach reading (comprehension) and writing (production) and the relations that may be established between both, since they are a concerned shared by all. We also believe that between reading and writing (from the first to the second) it is possible to establish a systematic work of interaction, programmed and rightly founded, that will reflect positively in students’ performance and, consequently, will promote their sucess in Mother Tongue as well as in the other areas of the curriculum, due to the cross-curricular dimension of this school subject. With this study we aimed to answer some questions: (i) What are the perceptions of 5th grade students and of their teachers of Portuguese about: the contribution of reading comprehension to the production of written texts? strategies that promote this transfer of competences; (ii) What kind of strategies, in what concerns the teaching of the Mother Tongue, may promote this interaction between reading comprehension and writing; (iii) What changes will be necessary to introduce, in Mother Tongue classes, in order to renew the teaching practice? Aiming to obtain data related to the above mentioned issues, we designed, tested, rebuilt and administrated two questionnaires (one to the students, another to the teachers), interviewed the inquired teachers that wanted to carry on with our study and analysed some aspects of the textbook adopted at the school where the study was carried out. Then we did a comparative analyses of the teachers’ answers to their questionnaire, the answers to the interview and the students’ answers to their questionnaire; the textbook analyses was then compared with the other data. This way we obtained information that allowed us to answer the questions that we defined for this investigation. This study revealed the existence of serious problems in the learningteaching process of reading and writing. Although teachers and students are aware of the validity and the importance of the reading and writing interaction, it is really seldom applied, being occasionally worked and not always programmed. In this context and being aware of the need to change Mother Tongue classes in order to urgently renew the teaching practice in this domain, we thought it would be important to dedicate a chapter of this work suggesting strategies to promote the interaction between reading comprehension and writing, supported by the literature review and the reflections done, based on the analyses and interpretation of data collected during this investigation. |
