O ponto de vista da cegueira : uma leitura comparativa de The country of the blind e Ensaio sobre a cegueira

Abstract

O regresso contemporâneo da barbárie, tornado evidente pela multiplicação de guerras, ataques terroristas ou perseguições étnicas, parece indiciar o retrocesso da humanidade a um estádio primitivo: fracassada a sociedade utópica com que tinha sonhado, o homem confronta-se hoje com o apocalipse distópico que ele próprio criou e que a sua cegueira moral ajuda a perpetuar. Publicadas respetivamente no início e no final do século XX, as narrativas «The Country of the Blind», de H. G. Wells, e Ensaio sobre a cegueira, de José Saramago, recorrem ao motivo literário da cegueira para propor uma reflexão sobre a natureza e as condições de sobrevivência do humano num mundo onde ele já não tem lugar. A leitura comparativa dos dois textos, desenvolvida na presente dissertação, centra-se na imaginação distópica neles presente e no modo como cada um dos autores procedeu à sua concretização ficcional, designadamente através da combinação de elementos realistas ou fantásticos e da tematização do amor e do erotismo. A identificação de diferenças e afinidades entre ambos permitiu-nos contrastar a dimensão lúdico-fantástica do conto de Wells com a denúncia alegórica empreendida no romance de Saramago.

The recent return of barbarism, becoming evident in the multiplication of wars, terrorism attacks and ethnic persecutions seems to indicate the recession of humanity to a primitive stage: ever since the utopian dream of a perfect society has been shattered, mankind finds itself confronted with a dystopian apocalypse created by itself and its moral blindness helps perpetuate it. Published respectively at the beginning and at the end of the twentieth century, the two narratives – «The Country of the Blind» by H. G. Wells and Ensaio sobre a Cegueira by José Saramago – resort to the literary motif of blindness to propose a reflection on man’s nature and its survival conditions in a world where it appears to have no place. The comparative reading of these two works developed in this dissertation focuses on the dystopian imagination presented in them and on the way each individual author proceeded to their fictional concretion through the combination of realist and fantastic elements, and the thematization of love and eroticism. The identification of differences and similarities between both has allowed us to contrast the playful and fantastic dimension of Wells’ short story with the allegoric denouncement undertaken in Saramago’s novel.
