The present dissertation focuses on the historical and dynamic relationship between the productive system and the qualification levels, with a background of Entre Douro e Vouga (EDV), a sub-region considered, till 2013, in statistical terms, as one of NUTS III (Nomenclature of Territorial Units), integrated on North Region (NUT II) of Portugal and composed by five municipalities - Arouca, Oliveira de Azeméis (OAZ), Santa Maria da Feira (SMF), São João da Madeira (SJM) and Vale de Cambra (VC). A qualitative retrospective is based on three historical periods: (1) Industrial Revolution; (2) Taylorism- Fordism; (3) Globalization, Technology and Knowledge Society, demonstrating the historical and dynamic evolution of the relationship between the world of work and school. And a quantitative analysis that looks for is centered on the statistical data of the Recenseamento Geral da População, referring to 2001 and 2011, and in the active population of the sub-region EDV, between the 25-64 years, through which one intends to know the productive morphology, economy and educational context of the sub-region. Within the relationship between the productive system and qualification levels, two types of subordination stand out. One centered on the subjugation of education to capitalist dictates throughout the Industrial Revolution and the automation of production. And the second comes with the intensification of globalization and new technologies, where awareness of the importance of education for socioeconomic development begins. The productive and educational picture of the EDV functions as a mirror of the existing dynamics within the relationship between the productive and school world, where a serious educational deficit is highlighted, with the domain of Basic Education and, in the particularity of SMEs, low technological intensity. It reflects that the sub-region could not escape the heavy historical legacy of subjugation of education. However, between 2001 and 2011, it takes important steps to raise the awareness of the importance of education, in particular with the progressive tertiarizations and the increase of the educational levels of the population. With this empirical study we intend to contribute with more knowledge on the subject and deepen some dynamics in the sub-region. We consider this kind of work as essential and necessary social research, as it makes us known some realities that, although some other slight studies, have considerable social and even political significance.
